Dermatology is a branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis and management of skin conditions. A dermatologist is a medical doctor (M.D. or D.O) who receives additional training in dermatology after graduating from medical school.

Dermatologists diagnose and treat a variety of skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and skin cancer. Dermatologists also treat skin conditions arising from systemic and infectious diseases, as well as cosmetic issues, such as hair loss, scars, and issues related to aging skin. Cosmetic treatments such as botox and collagen injections, phototherapy, and use of lasers are also within dermatologists' areas of expertise.

Dermatology Specialties

Cosmetic dermatologists offer a variety of cosmetic procedures to provide a more youthful appearance, such as botulinum toxin (Botox, Dysport), dermal fillers (Restylane), laser hair removal and laser resurfacing.

A dermatopathologist is a dermatologist who specializes in the pathology of skin. Skin biopsies are sent to a dermatopathologist for microscopic examination and other tests to diagnose the cause of the skin condition.

Mohs surgeons are dermatologists who have gained additional training in Mohs Surgery. Mohs Surgery focuses on the excision of skin cancers using a tissue-sparing technique that allows assessment of the tumor and its removal during the procedure.

Pediatric dermatologists are dermatologists who have completed training in pediatrics and dermatology. They tend to focus on the complex skin diseases of newborns, hereditary skin diseases, and common pediatric skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, and hemangiomas.

Professional Dermatology Organizations

The American Academy of Dermatology is the largest, most influential and most representative of all dermatologic associations. With a membership of over 16,000, it represents virtually all practicing dermatologists in the United States. The Academy is committed to excellence in patient care, medical and public education, research, professionalism and member service and support.

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery represents 4,700 dermatologists that are trained to treat skin and soft tissue with both medically necessary and cosmetic surgical and non-surgical methods.
