Dermatology is a branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis and management of skin conditions. A dermatologist is a medical doctor (M.D. or D.O) who receives additional training in dermatology after graduating from medical school.
Dermatologists diagnose and treat a variety of skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and skin cancer. Dermatologists also treat skin conditions arising from systemic and infectious diseases, as well as cosmetic issues, such as hair loss, scars, and issues related to aging skin. Cosmetic treatments such as botox and collagen injections, phototherapy, and use of lasers are also within dermatologists' areas of expertise.
