Facial Flushing
Blushing is an emotional form of flushing, associated with anxiety and embarrassment.
Blushing happens when the small blood vessels of the face, ears, and neck dilate (enlarge), causing more blood to flow to that area. The face, ears or neck then turn red.
Normal physiologic responses:
- Anxiety, embarrassment
- Thermoregulation - when the body tries to regulate the body temperature. It occurs when an individual becomes hot or during exercise.
- Alcohol consumption
- Menopause
- Food additives like MSG, sodium nitrite, sulfites
Medications that cause flushing:
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
- Calcium channel blockers
- Calcitonin
- Cyclosporine
- Gold
- Hydralazine
- Nicotinic acid
- Nitrates
- Opiates
- Prostaglandins
- Tamoxifen
Other Associated Diseases
- Carcinoid tumors are cancers that secrete a chemical that causes the blood vessels to dilate.
- Mastocytoma
- Pheochromocytoma
- Medullary carcinoma of the thyroid
- Thyrotoxicosis.
There are other rare causes of flushing. Individuals experiencing excessive flushing should seek evaluation by a medical professional who can help determine the cause.
Treatment
In the absence of systemic diseases or medication, treatment includes beta-blockers, clonidine, or medications to reduce anxiety.
